2009.02.15 Snowmobile Trail ride from Solon : Snowmobile Trails 4 and 4a Solon to OHV park and then along Lake Macbride (about 14 miles - 2 hrs riding). Similar conditions to yesterday but less snow overall. More mud in some areas and in the woods where it was deep snow it was actually a bit more compacted - less slipping on ice. Along and behind the OHV park the bike tracks from yesterday were still fresh. The trail along Lake Macbride was pretty soft in areas. Will avoid until it either gets fully frozen again or the snow is long since melted.

2009.02.14 Snowmobile Trails near Solon : Snowmobile Trails 4 and 4a Solon to OHV park and then along Lake Macbride (about 14 miles - 2 hrs riding). Until a few days ago was looking forward to a frozen dry trail with patches of ice since almost all snow had melted away - followed by a couple really of cold days. Then yesterday through last night got about 3-4 " of fresh wet snow. I was expecting everything to be too loose and deep to ride esp if the snowmobiles got out. They did but it was warmer last night and cooler today than forecast and the snowmobile tracks were actually pretty good and packed. No sinkage. In the fresh stuff it was powdery. Only in the woods behind the OHV park where there was a still a good base of snow and a lot of ice was it a bit squirrel-y. Speeds went down from 11 to about 4 mph for 1-2 miles. I had 2.4 mutano raptors on front and IRC studded rears. They studs didn't help much. Never really had much contact with the ice - just slid on the snow above it. Maybe aggressive nokians would have made a noticeable difference.

This was JR's inaugural Pugsly ride. This ride was exactly what it was made for. Two thumbs up I'm sure. We made it back in time for a late breakfast of beer, steak and eggs at Smitty's Bar. A great end to a great ride.

2009.02.01 Snowmobile Trails from Solon : Recon report from today: The snowmobile trails out of Solon to Ely and over to Lake Macbride have a lot of exposed mud/grass and most of the snow is thin, densely packed and after this weekend, firm from the melting - crappy for snowmobiles in all but a few sections. I rode about 13 miles of trails including the multi use trail along Lake MacBride into Solon. It was in the low 30's temp wise. I was only sinking in slightly in a few sections and in one spot I had to get off and push the bike for about 20 feet. Otherwise the snow was firm and icy - but not slippery. Mostly there was a lot of water, mud and grit. Ride time was 1hr 30min. Total out and back time was + 1 hr to stop for all these fine photos

2008.06.22 Bicycle Tour of Colorado - Jeep Tour : For the day off in Telluride, we took a half day jeep tour on the Tomboy road to Imogene Pass. The pass was still snowed in so we couldn't take the typical trip all the way to the top. So our turn around point was the Tomboy Mine and ghost town. We did take an extra excursion to the bottom of Bridal Veil Falls. Our guide and driver from Telluride Outside tours was Jerry O'Roark was great. His grandfather worked in the Tomboy gold mines while it was still active.

2008.02.02 Snowmobile Trails from Solon to Ely : Started in Solon. Picked up a snowmobile trail just north of Randall Park. Followed the trail that hooked up with the former BCR&N Railroad and took that north to Ely where it ended at Seven Sisters Road. On the way back took the snowmobile trail I had seen around the OHV park. That ended up coming out of the woods near the Sandy Beach area of Lake MacBride. Then rode paved roads back to Solon so I could get down to Iowa City and join up with the ICETIT ride. About an 18 mile round trip. 14 of those were on snowmobile trails or the railroad bed

A few days before the ride the snowmobile trails were pretty of recent snow and a lot of sections were exposed grass. The snow covered sections I walked on were hard packed (unfortunately I didn't come across any of the Ice that I would encounter further on into the trails). The night before there was about 2-3" of snow. Temps in the mid 20's to low 30's during the ride. Snow was soft but not too packed down. The trail sections were mostly over a base of grass but a lot of areas had a base of slick ice. Especially in protected areas in and along the woods and on hills or any area where there would have been spinning by ATVs or Snowmobiles.

2007.12.29 Holiday Ride to Hills : Most of the Holiday riders just returned to OCBW from the bridge on Napoleon Street. The more adventuresome took some gravel and B roads to Hills. Strong westerly winds during the prior week had drifted the snow a bit too deep on the southerly B section of Sioux Ave. So we tried this easterly section of 500th street to get back to Sand Road.

2007.12.13 : Quite a lot of ice and slushy snow made this pretty tough going on the roads. Pugsley riders definitely had an advantage there. Trail was just covered in relatively fresh snow over ice and was not too bad for those with spikey tires (just me).
