Started in Solon. Picked up a snowmobile trail just north of Randall Park. Followed the trail that hooked up with the former BCR&N Railroad and took that north to Ely where it ended at Seven Sisters Road. On the way back took the snowmobile trail I had seen around the OHV park. That ended up coming out of the woods near the Sandy Beach area of Lake MacBride. Then rode paved roads back to Solon so I could get down to Iowa City and join up with the ICETIT ride. About an 18 mile round trip. 14 of those were on snowmobile trails or the railroad bed
A few days before the ride the snowmobile trails were pretty of recent snow and a lot of sections were exposed grass. The snow covered sections I walked on were hard packed (unfortunately I didn't come across any of the Ice that I would encounter further on into the trails). The night before there was about 2-3" of snow. Temps in the mid 20's to low 30's during the ride. Snow was soft but not too packed down. The trail sections were mostly over a base of grass but a lot of areas had a base of slick ice. Especially in protected areas in and along the woods and on hills or any area where there would have been spinning by ATVs or Snowmobiles.
Ice. Nokian Extremes would have been perfect. I'm riding 2.4" Mutano Raptors on Alex DX32 (39mm wide) rims.
